Arkansas men’s golf team moved up to second place after a strong performance in the second round of the Carmel Cup at Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California. The Razorbacks shot a 13-under-par 347 on Saturday, which was the second-lowest round of the day, bringing their two-day total to 711 (-9).
Vanderbilt maintained its lead by shooting a 14-under-par round and holds a 13-stroke advantage over Arkansas with a total score of 698 (-22). Arkansas climbed from sixth to second place and is now ahead of defending national champion Oklahoma State by two strokes and fourth-place Oklahoma by six.
John Daly II led Arkansas on Saturday, tying his career-best score in relation to par with a 5-under round. He finished the day with a total of 143 (-1) after moving up 22 spots following his round of 67. “Daly tied his career-best score in relation to par with a 5-under round. He moved up 22 spots with his 67 on Saturday. The senior started fast with birdies on holes 4 and 5 and made the turn at 2-under. He dropped a shot on the par-4 10th but bounced back with birdies on 11, 13, 14 and 17.”
Niilo Maki-Petaja also improved his position, jumping fifteen places to tie for fourteenth after posting a three-under-par round of 69. “The junior opened with pars on the first four holes, then bogeyed the par-3, fifth. Maki-Petaja answered with a birdie on the sixth hole and played the back nine at three under with birdies on holes eleven, fourteen, and sixteen.”
Cam Smith and Thomas Curry each carded rounds of seventy and are tied for fourteenth as well. Both players were one over in round one but are now one under after thirty-six holes.
Erich Fortlage remains Arkansas’ top performer overall, firing another one-under-par seventy-one for the second consecutive day. He is currently ninth overall with a two-day total of one hundred forty-two (-2).
Gerardo Gomez is tied for twenty-eighth after rounds of seventy-three and seventy-four for a combined score of three-over-par one hundred forty-seven.
The final round will take place Sunday at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
