The University of Arkansas baseball team defeated South Carolina 22-6 in a run-rule victory on March 20 at Founders Park, marking the second-most runs scored by Arkansas in a Southeastern Conference game and the most during Dave Van Horn’s tenure as head coach.
This result is significant as it continues Arkansas’ strong performance early in conference play, improving their record to 17-6 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. The Razorbacks are aiming for their second consecutive SEC weekend series win.
Maika Niu led the offense with two home runs and six runs batted in. Arkansas hit six home runs total during the game. Camden Kozeal, Damian Ruiz, Kuhio Aloy, TJ Pompey, and others contributed to an early lead that saw four runs scored in the first inning and continued scoring through each subsequent frame. Starting pitcher Gabe Gaeckle allowed four runs (two earned) over five innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
Head coach Dave Van Horn reached his 950th career victory at Arkansas faster than any previous coach in program history, achieving this milestone in his 1,428th game. Former head coach Norm DeBriyn previously accomplished his own 950th win after coaching for 1,444 games.
Arkansas has now won five straight regular season series against South Carolina dating back to 2018 and has not lost a series at Columbia since 2016. The next matchup between these teams is scheduled for March 21 with Hunter Dietz starting for Arkansas.
