Arkansas sits sixth after opening round of Carmel Cup men’s golf tournament

Arkansas began its 2025-26 men’s golf season at the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California, finishing the opening round in sixth place with a team score of 4-over-par 364. The tournament is being held at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Vanderbilt leads the eight-team field after shooting an 8-under 352. TCU is in second place at 2-under, while Oklahoma State sits third at 1-over. Mississippi State and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 3-over. Arkansas follows at 4-over, with Texas Tech and Georgia rounding out the standings.

Sophomore Erich Fortlage was Arkansas’ top performer in the first round, carding a 1-under 71. He overcame early bogeys on holes two and four by making birdies on nine and eleven, then added further birdies on sixteen and seventeen to finish under par.

Three Razorbacks—Cam Smith, Gerardo Gomez, and Thomas Curry—each shot rounds of 73 and are tied for twenty-third at one over par. Niilo Maki-Petaja finished with a 74 (tied for twenty-ninth), while John Daly II posted a 76 (tied for thirty-sixth).

The second round of the three-round event will take place tomorrow. Arkansas will tee off in the second wave, starting with Cam Smith at 12:58 p.m. Central Time.

The Carmel Cup runs from August 29 to August 31 and is hosted by Texas Tech at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
