Arkansas running back Braylen Russell has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, according to an announcement from the PwC SMU Athletic Forum on Tuesday.

The Doak Walker Award, established in 1990, is given each year to the top college running back in the country.

Russell, a sophomore, had a notable freshman season in 2024. He rushed 67 times for 354 yards and scored three touchdowns. On October 26, 2024, during Arkansas’ win over Mississippi State, he became the first freshman since Darren McFadden in 2005 to rush for at least 175 yards in a single game. Russell achieved this by carrying the ball 16 times for 175 yards. He also contributed significantly in Arkansas’ victory over then-No. 4 Tennessee on October 5, rushing eight times for 62 yards. Russell is only the third freshman running back to score multiple touchdowns during Sam Pittman’s tenure as head coach.

“The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will also be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.”

The winner of the 2025 Doak Walker Award will be revealed live during The Home Depot College Football Awards show on December 12.

Arkansas began its fall camp last week and will start its season against Alabama A&M at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on August 30. The game is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff and will air on SEC Network.
