DJ Wagner, a member of the Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team, discussed his basketball journey and family legacy in an interview with Matt Zimmerman. Wagner comes from a notable basketball family: his grandfather Milt Wagner was a prominent player at Louisville, and his father Dajuan Wagner played under coach John Calipari at Memphis.
Now playing for Arkansas, DJ Wagner talked about the lessons learned from both his father and grandfather. He emphasized how their influence shaped his approach to basketball and described his mother as possibly the most competitive person in the family. Growing up in New Jersey, known for its strong basketball culture, also contributed to his development as a player.
Wagner spoke about the challenges that come with being one of the nation’s top recruits and described how he balances humility with confidence on the court. “From the pressures of being one of the nation’s top recruits to the mindset shift of ‘killer be killed’ when he steps on the court, DJ opens up about the balance between humility and confidence and the responsibility of carrying a name that means so much in the sport,” said Zimmerman during their conversation.
He also addressed what it means to play for Coach Calipari at Arkansas, connecting him to his family’s history while allowing him to forge his own path. “This is the story of how DJ Wagner is honoring his past while proving he’s ready to create his own legacy in Razorback red,” said Zimmerman.
