City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.
The City of Fayetteville received honors in two state-wide competitive awards programs during the 2020 Arkansas Municipal League Conference on Thursday, February 13.
Arkansas Business sponsors the annual Trendsetter City awards program to honor cities that are leaders in innovative programs and initiatives for improvement and growth. Mayor Lioneld Jordan and Chamber of Commerce President Steve Clark accepted the first-place award in the Education/Workforce category of cities over 20,000 for the Chamber’s three-pronged approach to promoting skilled workers. The Chamber’s Northwest Fab Lab makerspace, the workforce education textbook, “The Calling,” and the Northwest Regional Robotics Training Center (R2TC) for robotics and automation skills training were called out as innovative solutions for helping create new career pathways in the region.
Also, in the Trendsetter City Tourism Development/Creative Culture category focused on promoting quality of life, Fayetteville received honorable mention for the many festivals put on by both Fayetteville’s Parks and Recreation Department and the City’s Advertising and Promotion Commission, Experience Fayetteville, including the Gulley Park Summer Concert Series, First Thursday on the Square, and the Square 2 Square Bike Ride. In the category of Infrastructure/Water, the City received honorable mention for the solar installations adjacent the City’s wastewater treatment plants, citing Fayetteville as the city with the largest solar power system on municipal land, and the only system in Arkansas with onsite utility-scale storage.
The awards program sponsored by Engage AR (Empowering Arkansas Communities through Service) gave Fayetteville top honors, along with seven other cities, as an Arkansas Volunteer Community of the Year. The awards are given to communities that exemplify the spirit of service by demonstrating outstanding ability to mobilize volunteers in sustaining ongoing programs. Fayetteville was recognized for engaging residents in environmental protection through efforts to remove invasive species and increase the City’s urban tree canopy. The City extends a very big THANK YOU to the volunteers who donated 9,443 hours of service for participating in invasive species removal and Arbor Day and Earth Day activities, helping make Fayetteville shine for its innovative ecologic service programs.
