City of Tontitown issued the following announcement on July 14.
“FEMA has advised Washington County, and those individual municipalities that lie within it, that proposed changes to the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM’s) have been completed. These proposed changes are officially referred to as ‘Preliminary Flood Hazard Maps’.
Flood zone maps, officially known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (or FIRM), are issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a means to implement the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by assigning flood risk zones to various properties.
These flood risk zones are called ‘Special Flood Hazard Areas’ (SFHA’s). Most typically, the SFHA’s are shown on the FIRM’s as the 1% annual chance flood, which are often referred to as the ‘100-Year Flood Zone’ or the ‘100-Year Floodplain’.
Below are several online resources to access the Preliminary Flood Hazard Maps.
